No climate emissions
The emission reduction for the years 2007 - 2017 is 62% (60,500,000 kgCO2 ), which is equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of approximately 5,500 people. (Source: Finnish Environment Institute 2019)
In the pursuit of low-carbon, fossil raw materials are being replaced with renewable energy sources and material flows are being used more efficiently. Next, Iiss will focus on minimizing waste and promoting a circular economy.

Pioneer in renewable energy
In the Ii region, approximately 620 GWh of energy is produced annually from water (power plants: Raasakka and Pahkakoski), approximately 300 GWh from wind (parks: Vatunki, Olhava, Nyby, Laitakari and Myllykangas) and approximately 40 GWh of heat from wood energy (heating plants and separate use). Clean energy is produced in the Ii region more than 10 times more than consumption. Power plant taxes are approximately 2,2 million euros/year (hydropower and wind power).
Finland's largest wind power concentration
A total of 56 turbines with a combined capacity of 145 MW are in operation at Ii. The total value of the investments is approximately 200 million euros. There are 47 turbines under construction.
Nutrient-neutral forest plan increases carbon sink
A management and use plan will be drawn up for municipally owned park and commercial forests until 2029. A nutrient-neutral forest plan means, for example, that fertilizers that pollute water bodies will be abandoned. Other significant measures may include, for example, reducing ditching and soil cultivation, developing logging methods, and planting new forests. The plan is expected to be completed in November 2020.
Reducing traffic emissions with electric vehicles
The municipality's staff has a total of four fully electric cars and four electric vans at their disposal. The municipality wants to encourage other operators in the area to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and driving costs, and to promote the creation of an electric charging system in the area.
