General plans and local plans are approved by the municipal council. Minor changes to the local plan are approved by the municipal board.

Current announcements and notices regarding pending plans and other zoning projects are published on the municipality's website and in local newspapers.

Construction site inspection in areas near schools
The construction site review is mainly limited to vacant/undeveloped plots suitable for residential or holiday home construction located within a 3 km radius of schools. Buildings with a deviation application are also excluded from the review.

Zoning review
The municipality must prepare a review of pending and upcoming planning matters once a year. The planning review and program presents the municipality's planning situation: provincial, general and local planning, as well as current development and general plans. The planning review was approved at the municipal board meeting on 13 January 2025.

Land political program
The municipal land policy comprises the objectives and measures related to the municipality's land acquisition and the implementation of plans, which create the conditions for the development of the municipality.

The land policy program is a document that specifies the goals set in the municipal strategy and enables their implementation. The municipal council approved the land policy program on 8 October 2018.

Karhu town plan
As a result of the negotiations with the landowner of the area and the additional reviews mentioned above, the municipal board has decided at its meeting on February 22, 2021 to stop preparing the local plan for the central part of Karhu Island.

The preparation of the Karhu local plan was launched in late 2017. The planning area is located in the central part of Karhu Island and its goal has been to design a residential area that takes into account the island's natural values. The preparation material for the plan has been available since early 2019. After the preparation phase, the flood heights of the area and their effects on construction have been investigated, and additional studies have been made regarding the possible number of plots in the local plan area and the costs of construction.
